Simplifying Therapy for Pemphigus & Pemphigoid
Diplomat combines clinical expertise with personalized care.Pemphigus and pemphigoid are autoimmune diseases, meaning they cause your immune system to attack healthy cells. Pemphigus and pemphigoid both target the “glue” that holds together your skin cells or your mucous membranes. This causes painful blisters that can be widespread.
It’s not clear what causes pemphigus and pemphigoid. Genetics might play a role. Environmental factors such as radiation, medications, or UV light might help cause it, too. Regardless of the cause, pemphigus and pemphigoid are not contagious.
Most people who have pemphigus and pemphigoid are middle-aged or older, though children and young adults can have it too. Men and women are equally affected.

What are the symptoms of pemphigus and pemphigoid?
Pemphigus and pemphigoid affect people differently. If you have one of these conditions, you might experience blisters in various locations around your body, including your eyes, genitals, mouth, nose, and throat. If you have ongoing blistering on your skin or mouth, you should consult a doctor.

What is the difference between pemphigus and pemphigoid?
“Pemphigoid” means “looks like pemphigus,” and the two conditions both cause blisters. But they do have differences:
- Pemphigus blisters break easily, so people with pemphigus often have more scars than blisters. Pemphigus can affect people at any age.
- Pemphigoid blisters are hard and difficult to break. Pemphigoid is more common in older adults.
